How to submit safely

Our form encrypts what you send, but it cannot protect the device you use. Before you write:

  • Use a device that isn't yours, or isn't shared, if someone else could check yours: a trusted friend's computer or a library.
  • Open a private or incognito window so the visit isn't kept in your history, and close it when you are done.
  • For stronger protection, use Tor Browser. It hides your IP address from us, from our hosting provider, and from anyone watching your connection.
  • Don't include children's names, or details that would identify them. Describe them instead: “a boy of about ten”.
  • Leave out details that point to you unless they matter. Dates, places and small details can identify the writer.
  • Photos carry hidden location data. Send a screenshot instead, or remove the location first. We strip metadata before publishing anything, but it is still inside what you send us.
  • Contact details are optional. If you give one, a Signal handle is safer than an email address.
  • You don't need to keep your receipt code. Keep it only if you want to add to the same submission later, and then only somewhere only you can reach. Otherwise, just send again.

After you send

Nothing is published beyond the consent you chose. Editors may take weeks to read and check an account, and may not be able to reply unless you left a contact. What you send cannot be withdrawn or changed afterwards, so take your time before sending; you can add more later with your receipt code. How your data is handled is set out in Privacy; how accounts are used, in Methodology.
