Alan Ross Wexler was known in ISKCON as Bhakti Vidya Purna Swami. He was a senior figure in the ISKCON community at Mayapur, West Bengal, India, where he was principal of the boys’ gurukula, which ISKCON News calls the Bhaktivedanta Academy gurukula; ISKCON’s North American Regional Governing Body says the Bhaktivedanta Gurukula Village was later renamed Sri Rupanuga Paramartik Vidhyapith. In his own words, he accepted responsibility for the Mayapur gurukula “on the order of the Mayapur G.B.C.” in April 1982. In August 1991 he offered his resignation as principal; the ISKCON Board of Education’s chairman wrote that October that he had been replaced by Dayaram Prabhu. A GBC member wrote in 2000 that the local GBC had asked him to continue, and that he did. He was a sannyasi and an ISKCON initiating guru.
Since late 2022 ISKCON has referred to him by his first-initiation name, Anirdesya Vapu Dasa, after his sannyasa status was suspended.
His birth year, the years of his initiation and sannyasa, and his current residence are not confirmed in the sources reviewed.

According to ISKCON News, an ICOCP review panel found him responsible for "child sexual abuse, (sexual) harassment, emotional and spiritual abuse, and grooming of a child" in Mayapur between 2005 and 2010, calling the evidence "compelling". The GBC said the panel's report "ascertains" that he "repeatedly engaged in the sexual abuse of a minor girl", and GBC and CPO statements also say he engaged in sexual acts with an adult woman over an extended period, which the GBC called "pastoral abuse".
The CPO and GBC say the girl was a minor; he says the touching he admits happened after she turned 18. The adult matter was outside the CPO’s jurisdiction and was referred to a joint review by ISKCON’s PLMO, Sannyasa Ministry and Guru Services. No police or court action has been found.
- 2022AdmittedPartial. The GBC says he "has admitted to some of these grave offences while under investigation"; he says he touched her three times but only after she turned 18.
- 2022ISKCON findingGBC resolution following the ISKCON Central Office of Child Protection review panel decision of 2022-10-28 (reported by ISKCON News; the decision text is not public).
The CPO (October 2022) required an apology and USD 5,000 to the victim for counselling; barred him for three years from visiting or staying at ISKCON centres except one approved temple; and for life from Mayapur (to be left within 30 days), from residing or staying overnight at any ISKCON centre, from leadership or management "even in an advisory capacity", from giving any initiation or accepting siksa disciples, from classes, kirtan or harinama (including online), from Deity or brahminical service, and from service involving under-18s. The North American Council endorsed these and added regional restrictions. In December 2022 the GBC banned him for life from accepting disciples, serving as siksa guru or giving spiritual instruction at any ISKCON venue or online forum, declared initiations he gave after February 2007 to have "no standing in ISKCON", and noted that his sannyasa had been suspended.
In a December 2022 statement he wrote, "I have already agreed to all the punishments imposed on me," said he touched her inappropriately three times "when she was over 18 years old", that "I never interacted on a sensual platform with any minor", and that the allegations "either never happened, are taken out of context, or are grossly exaggerated". He added: "I sincerely repent and ask for forgiveness for my wrong actions." [5]

Physical and emotional abuse of students as Mayapur gurukula principal
ISKCON's Child Protection Office found in 2000 that, as principal of the Mayapur boys' gurukula, he was responsible for physical and emotional abuse of students, according to ISKCON News and the North American RGB. ISKCON News reports that the investigation also found he "was aware of the incidences of sexual child abuse but chose to ignore them". The GBC states he was "restricted from teaching or managing any ISKCON school". In April 2000 Badrinarayan dasa, a GBC member, wrote to B.B. Govinda Swami that there were "many confirmed reports" of him "beating kids with canes, sticks, and in one case a thorny bush", and that "it went on for years and got so bad that Jayapataka Maharaja finally had to come and take the canes and sticks away". He added that when the Board of Education tried to introduce child-abuse prevention programmes about 1988, he, Bhurijana and Dhanurdhara Swami "fought it every single step of the way". Manu dasa of the ISKCON Youth Ministry stated in a note the child-protection office filed in 2001 that in March 2000, a few hours after Sridhar Swami asked at the GBC meeting whether "Manu was investigating against Bhakti Vidya Purna swami", "some 25 of Maharaj's 20-30 year old men disciples, teachers and ashram monitors" sought him out and told him "We need to talk."
In July 1991 an investigation team appointed by the GBC reported serious sexual abuse among students at the Mayapur gurukula; a memorandum he co-signed told the Board of Education that “58 boys and the entire teaching and administrative staff were cleared of involvement”, a statement the Board’s chairman replied that few devotees would agree with. Notes of the Mayapur Child Protection Team from 1998 record that he reportedly dismissed a report of abuse by others with words like “It is nothing, it is only the western mentality”. In April 2000 the CPO director wrote that, after “several responses from GBCs indicating dissatisfaction, even outrage”, the office had “put this case on hold until it receives a letter from the GBC Executive Committee stating that the GBC is satisfied”, and that “as of now he has not been restricted in any way by the Child Protection Office”; the decision followed in September 2000.
In 2017 the GBC (Res. 303, Mayapur Schools) directed that “the previous principal” complete the “full mandate of the previous CPO decision”, without naming him. ISKCON News also reports that a 2007 CPO investigation was inconclusive, and that in a 2015 CPO case concerning the girls’ school the CPO found he promoted a “culture of fear”.
- 1991AdmittedPartial, institutional. After the July 1991 investigation of sexual abuse among Mayapur gurukula students, he wrote to the Mayapur GBC members listing the school's failures, including "our failure to properly train and protect the students of the Gurukula from succumbing to material lust and desire" and "our failure to properly affect discipline within the school", and submitted his resignation as principal.
- 1991Documented allegationThe ISKCON Board of Education wrote to him and the co-director of ISKCON Mayapur that, considering "ample warnings and concerns expressed over the years, the administrators involved are, at the very least, guilty of negligence", and that he "would have ample opportunity to ascertain the truth when confronted with allegations". A letter, not a formal ruling.
- 2000AdmittedISKCON News, quoting the 2000 CPO report, says he admitted "imposing excessive physical punishments".
- 2000ISKCON findingFirst CPO decision (September 2000, as dated in the GBC's 2022 resolution); the decision text itself was not obtained.
- 2007ISKCON findingGBC Res. 312-B restricted him from accepting disciples on the basis of the 2000 CPO decision.
In 2000 he was removed from any role connected with children and from managing or administering, and barred from initiating "for a specified time", per ISKCON News. In February 2007 the GBC barred him from accepting new disciples; the GBC said in 2022 that he had initiated devotees after that date. In June 2016 a statement approved by the GBC Executive Committee said he "is required to complete the full mandate of the previous CPO decision about him", including relocating "off, and away from any school facility within 14 days", and that the CPO decision "that Maharaja must not be engaged in any administration work must also be followed strictly"; it asked the Ministry of Education to "revisit its prior decision allowing Maharaja to teach".
In a December 2022 statement he wrote that the cane "was used from 1982 and was phased out on my own volition by 1988", that caning was then legal in India and England, and that he is "only indirectly responsible as the school manager for the inappropriate behaviour among the students in the 80's". Alleged direct sexual and physical abuse of gurukula boys (1980s)
In March 2023 ISKCON's North American Regional Governing Body published a statement about new testimony from a former student of the Mayapur gurukula, who alleged physical, sexual and psychological abuse between 1983 and 1990, including direct abuse by him as well as negligent supervision. The RGB said it accepted the account "as factual" and called for "the strictest punishments possible… including a lifetime ban". In 1998 another former student had told the Mayapur Child Protection Team that the swami touched his genitals when he was about 13 or 14. Neither account has been the subject of a CPO ruling.
In January 2023 SABHA (the Spiritual Advisors Bhagavata Assembly) wrote in an open letter to the GBC that he had “for many years committed and overlooked horrific verbal, physical and sexual abuse to children under his care and young ladies serving in his projects”, and that the abuse was “first recorded in 1981”; the letter does not say what record it refers to.
- 1998Reported allegationA former student told the Mayapur Child Protection Team that, when he was about 13 or 14, he slept in Bhakti Vidya Purna Swami's bed during a storm and was touched on his genitals. The notes record that the swami's students said the boy had imagined the incident. The complaint was not addressed in the 2000 CPO decision, and no ruling on it has been found.
- 2023Documented allegationNew testimony from a former student, sent to the CPO for review; the North American RGB accepted it "as factual". No CPO ruling on it has been found.
In his December 2022 statement on the CPO decision concerning a girl, written before the 2023 testimony was published, he wrote: "I never interacted on a sensual platform with any minor." No response from him to the 1998 or 2023 accounts has been found. [23]
