Bio

Satsvarupa dasa Goswami (legal name Stephen Guarino) was born in New York in 1939 and grew up on Staten Island. After two years in the US Navy he met A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada on the Lower East Side of New York in July 1966 and was initiated that September (his own biography and journals). He took sannyasa in Los Angeles in 1972.

He was one of ISKCON’s earliest leaders: a GBC member from the 1970s, its secretary in 1976 and 1977 and its chairman in 1978, editor-in-chief of Back to Godhead, and the author of a multi-volume biography of Prabhupada, Srila Prabhupada-lilamrta. In 1976 and 1977 his GBC zone included Dallas, home of ISKCON’s first central gurukula, which he writes he helped start; he says the abuses there “began after I left” (his journal, 2021). He was one of the eleven disciples Prabhupada named in 1977 to initiate on his behalf. He resigned from the GBC in 1987, during the guru reform, and was GBC Emeritus from 1999 to 2008. In 2000 he was named among the GBC members sued in Children of ISKCON v. ISKCON; the complaint makes no allegation about any act of his own, and he was never served.

In 2004 he acknowledged a sexual relationship with a married woman while he was a sannyasi and a guru, and the GBC Executive Committee announced that he would initiate no more disciples (see the record below). He kept the sannyasa order. He lives in New York State and continues to write.

Sexual relationship with a married woman while a sannyasi and initiating guru (c. 2002)

ConductBreaking sannyasa vowsPeriod c. 2002

In May 2004 Satsvarupa dasa Goswami, one of ISKCON's senior gurus, acknowledged that about a year and a half earlier, while a sannyasi, he had become romantically and "physically intimate" with a married woman who was counselling him. The GBC Executive Committee called it "a falldown" and announced that he had agreed to stop initiating disciples. He later wrote that there had been "a falldown on two separate occasions", that the matter came out when "an anonymous person exposed the scandal", and that he was "forbidden to initiate any more disciples in my life".

His account in 2004. On 1 May 2004, after what he called “gathering exposure”, he wrote to ISKCON’s leaders that he had tried many therapies for a severe anxiety disorder, that “a Godsister was helping me as a counselor, and regrettably I held sessions alone with her. And so the relationship developed.” He wrote that “a sannyasi should never be alone with a woman” and that he would not initiate any new disciples. On 10 May, answering his disciples’ questions, he wrote that “a naturally occurring emotional attachment between the counsellor and client was mishandled”, that they ended the relationship and all contact, and that “we did become physically intimate and this was wrong”. Asked why he had been silent until it was exposed, he answered that the relationship “had been completely closed” and that broadcasting it “would simply cause more harm than good”.

The GBC’s response. The GBC Executive Committee’s statement, published with his first letter on 11 May 2004, called it “a falldown”, expressed its “deep gratitude” toward him and acknowledged “his career of dedicated devotional service”, noted that as GBC Emeritus he held “no official position in the management of ISKCON”, and announced that he had agreed to stop initiating. It said he had “re-dedicated himself to his vows and asrama”. He kept the sannyasa order. In 2008 the GBC accepted his resignation as GBC Emeritus, without giving a reason.

His later account. In 2018 he wrote on his website that after taking sannyasa he had become infatuated with a woman, that years later a letter he wrote her “aroused her romantic feelings for me, and I reciprocated. Shortly after this, we had a falldown on two separate occasions. An anonymous person exposed the scandal, and I was given some restrictions by the GBC. Those disciples of mine who had lost faith in me were advised to take shelter in another ISKCON guru, and I was forbidden to initiate any more disciples in my life.”

The woman is not named here.

Status history
  1. 2004AdmittedIn a letter to his disciples he wrote that a counselling relationship with a married woman, a fellow disciple of Prabhupada, was "mishandled" — "me being a sannyasi and she a married woman" — and that "we did become physically intimate and this was wrong". On 1 May 2004 he had written to ISKCON's leaders of "a short-lived romantic involvement about one and a half years ago", adding that when the sannyasa minister asked whether they had had sexual intercourse, "I honestly said 'no.'"
  2. 2004ISKCON findingThe GBC Executive Committee, in a statement it said "represents ISKCON's official position", called it "a falldown that occurred in his spiritual life about a year and a half ago" and announced: "In consultation with the GBC EC, he has agreed to retire from initiating; he will not initiate any more disciples."
His response

He apologised ("I am profoundly sorry that I slipped and fell on the road this way") and said he had kept the matter private because "to broadcast it all over would simply cause more harm than good"; those who call anything other than broadcasting "a 'cover up' have a technical and theoretical definition of truth, which is not necessarily absolute".
