Bio

Mayapur Candra Dasa is an initiated disciple of Jayapataka Swami. According to a 2000 decision of ISKCON’s Central Office of Child Protection, he served as president of the ISKCON temple in Jagannatha Puri, Odisha, India, from 1991 through 1996, and was in his fifties in 2000.

The decision identifies him by that temple presidency and by his initiating guru; other devotees may share this common name. His birth name, birth year and later activity are not confirmed in the sources reviewed.

Inappropriate touching of a 12-year-old girl in Jagannatha Puri

CriminalChild sexual abusePeriod

ISKCON's Central Office of Child Protection determined in August 2000 that he "caressed the legs of a 12 year old girl" while she was at his home in Jagannatha Puri. The office said that, under the definitions of ISKCON's Child Protection Task Force, this "constitutes a precursor to child sexual abuse".

The decision does not date the incident. It describes him as having served as temple president in Jagannatha Puri from 1991 through 1996.

Outcome

As lifetime restrictions, the office barred him from leadership positions in ISKCON or affiliated organisations, from service connected with children and from living on ISKCON property, and required him to leave ISKCON property if the girl or her parents were present and objected. Giving classes or leading kirtan was conditional on a psychological assessment and therapy, a letter of apology and a contribution of at least USD 2,000 to a victims' grant programme; the office said it would then consider lifting that ban after two years. Whether he complied is not confirmed. No police or court case has been found.

His response

The decision does not record his account, and no public statement by him has been found. [1]
