Gopal Krishna Goswami (legal name Gopal Krishna Khanna) was born in New Delhi on 14 August 1944 (his will). After graduating from Delhi University in 1964 he studied business management in France and at McGill University in Montreal, where he met A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada in 1968 and was initiated in early 1969 (GBC biography). Prabhupada made him a member of ISKCON’s Governing Body Commission (GBC), responsible for India (GBC Executive Committee, 2024), and he remained on the GBC for the rest of his life. He took sannyasa in 1981, with the GBC’s permission as an exception to a moratorium, from Kirtanananda Swami, the leader of New Vrindaban, and became an initiating guru in 1982 (GBC resolutions; Brijabasi Spirit, 1981). He was GBC for Mumbai, Delhi and much of northern India, and served as chairman and trustee of the Bhaktivedanta Book Trust in India (GBC biography).
From 1984 to 2001 he was one of the GBC members for Vrindavan and the surrounding area (GBC resolutions), the zone of the Vrindavan gurukula during Dhanurdhara Swami’s years as its principal. He was later a member of the Vrindavan Executive Board, and his memorial website calls him “the foundational guardian and patron” of the gurukula’s new 60-acre campus at Ajhai, outside Vrindavan. ISKCON Vrindavan bought the land in 2012 (ISKCON News), construction began in his presence in May 2015 (ISKCON Desire Tree), and the school moved there in 2019. In 2017 the GBC put the school on probation after pupils were sexually abused off site, recording the child-protection office’s finding that the school’s child-protection training, policies and enforcement were inadequate (GBC resolutions).
In 2000 he was named, as “Gopal Khanna”, among the defendants of the US lawsuit brought by former gurukula students, as a GBC member from 1975 to 1999 and as an executor of Prabhupada’s estate; he was never served, and the federal claims against him were dismissed in 2001 (court records). Being named as a GBC member is not an allegation that he abused anyone. At the GBC’s October 2011 discussion of Lokanath Swami’s case, he said he “was in favour of long term restriction … Not permanent restriction” (GBC meeting notes). In 2023 a GBC-commissioned inquiry into child protection at the Mayapur and Vrindavan schools asked the India Bureau’s GBC members, “headed by Gopal Krishna Maharaja”, to obtain the Bureau’s formal commitment to support it.
In October 2011, after Kirtanananda Swami’s death, Gopal Krishna Goswami visited his body in Vrindavan before its burial, with Radhanath Swami and the president of ISKCON’s Vrindavan temple; photographs published on this site show him prostrating before it. The 2016 documentary Cost of Silence called this offensive to Kirtanananda Swami’s victims (Cost of Silence).
He died on 5 May 2024 in a hospital in Dehradun, aged 79, after a fall (GBC Executive Committee; Aaj Tak), and was buried in Vrindavan the next day (ISKCON News).

Record
1 entry · most established firstAlleged failure to act on abuse at the Vrindavan gurukula (BGIS), 2010s
Gopal Krishna Goswami was the patron of the Vrindavan gurukula, the Bhaktivedanta Gurukula and International School (BGIS), and of its new campus at Ajhai, and sat on the board that served as GBC for Vrindavan. In 2016 the GBC put the school on probation after pupils were sexually abused off site, and made fundraising for the new campus conditional on child-protection reforms. Critics allege that he did not act on abuse reports: the documentary Cost of Silence says he answered that as GBC he could not interfere with the school, and the film's maker says a 2018 child-protection report found 62 incidents of abuse in 73 days and that he pressed the GBC to keep the school's management in place. These are reported allegations; no ISKCON body has made a finding against him, and the 2018 report has not been seen.
His role. The Vrindavan gurukula, founded in 1976 beside the Krishna-Balaram temple, is today the Bhaktivedanta Gurukula and International School (BGIS). His memorial website calls him “the foundational guardian and patron” of its new 60-acre campus at Ajhai, outside Vrindavan. Construction began in his presence in May 2015 (ISKCON Desire Tree), and the school moved there in 2019. The school’s fundraising film for the campus ends with an appeal that its website prints over his signature: “Bhaktivedanta Gurukul and International School is a school with a difference. … This is a project with a difference and this project will produce children with good spiritual education, good character and will be a great help to the society and humanity at large.” In 2017 and 2018 he was one of the six members of the Vrindavan Executive Board, which the GBC listed as the zonal secretary for Vrindavan (GBC zonal assignments). No source found names him as a trustee or officer of the school itself.
What the GBC found. In June 2016 the GBC Executive Committee, answering the documentary Cost of Silence, wrote that “several months ago, students of the Vrindavana school were sexually abused off site by a local perpetrator who is known to be a danger”, whom the school had pushed the police to arrest. It put the school on probation and required, among other things, that its principal “live full time in Vrindavana and work full time at the school”. It added: “All efforts at fund-raising for a new school campus will be suspended, pending an approval of the GBC EC and the CPO Director that the above requirements have been completed for a minimum period of six months.” The resolution the GBC adopted (2017, res. 303) recorded the child-protection office’s finding that “child protection training, policies, and enforcement are inadequate within the BGIS”, and made the suspension of campus fundraising conditional on the reforms not being in place within three months. In 2018 the GBC noted “improvement … in regards to positive communications and cooperation with the Child Protection Team” and kept the school on probation until 2019 (res. 315). Whether fundraising was ever suspended is not known.
The allegations. The documentary’s companion text says that Gopal Krishna Goswami “took over the management” of the school in 2010 and that, when abuse was reported to him, he replied: “Lila Purusotoma Prabhu runs the management in Vrindavan gurukul. I as the GBC can not interfere with the regular running of the school. But you don’t worry about anything, you just continue your work of collecting money for the school”. It does not name who reported the abuse to him, and says that whenever abuse was brought to the school’s management “the order was ‘Please keep this in the family of ISKCON, do not let it get out.’” In 2024 the film’s maker, Sanaka Rsi dasa, wrote that a draft report the child-protection office submitted to the GBC in 2018 found that “in these course of these 73 days the CPO devotees uncovered a total of 62 incidents of child abuse with 8 teachers implicated”, and that the GBC “voted to keep the school open, with the same management”. In an interview the same year he said that the report asked the GBC to close the school or change its management, and that “Gopala-Krishna pressured the GBC, ‘No. Leave the gurukula open.’” He gives no source for that claim. The 2018 report has not been seen for this record; the GBC’s minutes record the probation but not individual votes. Lila Purushottam Das, appointed the school’s director in 2010 (ISKCON News), is still listed as its director on the school’s website in 2026.
Gopal Krishna Goswami died in 2024. No statement by him on these allegations has been found.
- 2016Reported allegationThe documentary Cost of Silence, made by critics of ISKCON's handling of child abuse, says that when abuse at the school was brought to him as GBC, he replied that he could not "interfere with the regular running of the school" and that the person reporting it should "continue your work of collecting money for the school". The film's text does not name who reported the abuse to him.
- 2024Reported allegationThe film's maker, Sanaka Rsi dasa, wrote that a 2018 report by ISKCON's child-protection office recorded 62 incidents of child abuse in 73 days of observation, with eight teachers implicated, and that the GBC kept the school open "with the same management"; in a 2024 interview he said Gopal Krishna Goswami "pressured the GBC" to do so. The report has not been seen for this record.
