Bio

Giriraj Swami (legal name Glenn Phillip Teton) is the son of a Chicago lawyer and judge, according to his GBC biography. He met A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada in Boston in 1969, while a student at Brandeis University, and was initiated by letter in July 1969. In 1972 Prabhupada made him president of ISKCON Bombay and a trustee of the Bhaktivedanta Book Trust. He took sannyasa in 1978 from Tamal Krishna Goswami, by his own account.

He joined the Governing Body Commission (GBC) as an acting member for Bombay in 1982 and became a full member in 1984. Over the following years the GBC minutes list him as co-GBC for Bombay, Mauritius, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, South Africa, and Spain and Portugal; he was the GBC’s executive secretary in 1993–94. He resigned from the GBC in 2000 and was made GBC Emeritus.

Prabhupada’s will of 1977 names “Giriraj das Brahmachary” among its executors. In 2000 and 2001 the Children of ISKCON lawsuits over abuse in ISKCON’s boarding schools named “Glen Teton” as a defendant in that capacity only, as an executor of Prabhupada’s estate; the filings make no allegation about any act of his.

In 2023 a Facebook post by Damodara dasa, later reproduced by the Dharma Sanga website, quoted emails in which Giriraj Swami asked a woman who had complained publicly about Kesava Bharati Dasa Goswami to explain “exactly what the abuse was”, and in which the then director of ISKCON’s office for leadership misconduct wrote that he had asked the woman or her friend “to take down her FB post”. The emails have not been verified.

In October 2024 the GBC announced that he had been diagnosed with behavioural-variant frontotemporal dementia, a degenerative brain disease. He stopped giving initiation at the end of 2024 and, the GBC said in April 2025, “has retired from active outreach”; it added that he would make India his home base.

Relationship with a woman disciple (2024), which the GBC attributes to dementia

ConductSexual misconduct with disciples, Breaking sannyasa vowsPeriod 2024

In October 2024 the GBC Executive Committee announced that Giriraj Swami, a sannyasi, had been diagnosed with behavioural-variant frontotemporal dementia, a degenerative brain disease that it said had been affecting him for several years. In the same statement it said that it had "learned of highly inappropriate communication that was exchanged between Giriraja Swami and a lady disciple for a brief period in August 2024". The disciple, who went public that month in a video and a podcast interview, described a sexual relationship that began on video calls in August 2024; she called it consensual and disputed the diagnosis. In April 2025 the GBC Executive Committee said that five independent specialists had confirmed the diagnosis and that the disease "has caused his uncharacteristic lapses in behavior", which it called "non-voluntary".

The woman is not named in this record, although she spoke publicly under her own name.

It listed the symptoms of his illness as "impaired judgment, socially inappropriate behavior, apathy, sexual indiscretion, and compulsive tendencies".
  2. 2024Documented allegationIn a podcast interview the disciple, speaking under her own name, said that he told her around 7 August 2024 that he was in love with her, that the relationship began on video calls and became sexual, including once in person at his residence, and that it lasted until a few weeks before the interview. She described it as consensual and said she did not believe he has dementia.
Outcome

On 27 October 2024 he wrote to the GBC that he would no longer give initiation; the GBC accepted this on 30 December 2024 and asked its Guru Services Committee, Sannyasa Ministry and ISKCONResolve to examine the link between his illness and his behaviour. On 21 April 2025 the GBC Executive Committee said that the disease had caused his "uncharacteristic lapses in behavior", which it called "non-voluntary", and that he "has retired from active outreach and will no longer give initiations".

His response

A statement by his care team on 1 October 2024 said that the diagnosis "significantly impairs his ability to control his actions and feelings, leading to behaviors that are inconsistent with his character and values". [2]
