Bio

Bhakti Purusottama Swami (legal name Mahesh Chandra Pattanayak) is an ISKCON sannyasi from Odisha and a disciple of Jayapataka Swami. According to his official GBC biography, he was born in 1957 in Jagannatha Puri, met ISKCON in 1976, joined in 1978, and was initiated by Jayapataka Swami in February 1979 with the name Jagadis Das. The same biography gives his age as 62 in 2016, which would put his birth in 1954. He was temple president of ISKCON Bhubaneswar from 1982 to 1987, took sannyasa from Jayapataka Swami in Kolkata in 1985, and from 1987 was general manager of ISKCON Mayapur.

He became a GBC deputy in 1999 and a full member of ISKCON’s Governing Body Commission in 2004, and was the GBC’s Secretary, an officer of its Executive Committee, from 2007 to 2016. Since at least 2012 he has been one of the GBC’s zonal secretaries, with Jayapataka Swami, for ISKCON Habibpur in West Bengal, as well as for Mayapur. He founded the Bhaktivedanta National School in Mayapur and the India Tribal Care Trust. He is not on the GBC’s list of initiating gurus.

In August 2024 the GBC member Anuttama dasa wrote to North American temple leaders that “undocumented and unproven allegations against Bhakti Purusottama Swami” had “come to the attention of the CPO office”, that the North American child-protection office could not give him “Full Clearance” status, but that “there is no existing CPO decision” restricting him (anuttama-2024; the letter is known only as reproduced on Facebook and does not say what the allegations are).

The two entries below rest on a dossier circulated in 2023, “Appeal for GBC and Bureau action against Bhaktipurushottama Swami”, which collects investigators’ reports and documents from 2015–2017 (appeal-2023; published here with victims’ names, private persons and bank and identity numbers blacked out). The dossier also contains anonymous and second-hand claims, which are not included in the entries below.

Allegations of sexual abuse of minors, sent to GBC leaders and the child-protection office (2022–2023)

CriminalChild sexual abusePeriod

From December 2022, posts and e-mails alleged that Bhakti Purusottama Swami had sexually abused children and young men. In May and June 2023 such allegations were sent to Jayapataka Swami, about twenty GBC members and ISKCON's child-protection office. The allegations are second-hand or anonymous; no victim has spoken publicly and no investigation result has been published. In August 2024 the GBC member Anuttama dasa wrote that "undocumented and unproven allegations" were before the child-protection office, which could not give him "Full Clearance", but that there was no decision restricting him.

What the allegations are, in the dossier’s own material:

  • A December 2022 post by Sanaka Rsi, a campaigner on child protection, alleged “sexual abuse of children and young men perpetrated by Bhakti Purushottam Swami (BPS)” (vi-2022-12).
  • An anonymous letter from a group calling itself the “Mayapuri Community” (February 2023) asked whether Mayapur would act on the “allegations of child abuse leveled against” him (emails-2023).
  • On 10 May 2023 an e-mail headed “sexual abuse by Bhakti Purushotama S (see docs attached)” was sent to Jayapataka Swami, about twenty GBC members, the child-protection office and Bhakti Purusottama Swami himself (emails-2023). The attached documents are not in the dossier.
  • On 11 June 2023 a further anonymous e-mail, “Consider yourselves duly informed”, sent to GBC members and the child-protection office’s director, relayed a third-hand account about a boy; the person who was said to be its source later denied having said anything (emails-2023).
  • Social-media comments in the dossier mention older rumours from Mayapur in the 1980s and 1990s, without any first-hand account.

These are reported allegations only. The record shows that they reached ISKCON’s leadership and its child-protection office in 2023; it does not show what, if anything, was investigated or concluded.

His response

No response from Bhakti Purusottama Swami has been found. Anuttama dasa's 2024 letter, written for the GBC, called the allegations "undocumented and unproven" and told temples they could host him. [3]

Signing a false ISKCON "resolution" as chairman to pledge an ISKCON deposit for a bank loan (2012)

CriminalFraud / embezzlement, Financial mismanagement, Breach of leadership standards (unspecified)Period 2012

Bhakti Purusottama Swami signed, as "Chairman", a "resolution" of a meeting said to have been held at Sri Mayapur on 22 May 2012, pledging an ISKCON fixed deposit of Rs 25 lakh as collateral for a bank loan to the Radha Madhav temple trust at Habibpur. A private investigator (2016) and an investigator commissioned by the GBC (2017) found that he was not the chairman and that no such meeting took place; the Bureau's own list of its 2012 meetings shows none on that date. The GBC-commissioned report called it "forging a document of the bureau resolution".

The GBC’s letter of 24 October 2016 (gbc-2016-10) shows that the GBC itself took up the matter. No GBC resolution or published decision on it has been found.

His response

According to the 2017 report, the deposit was in fact the Habibpur trust's own money, placed in ISKCON's name to avoid tax deducted at source. No public response from Bhakti Purusottama Swami has been found. [7]

Knowledge of violence at ISKCON Habibpur, and support for its suspended leaders, as its GBC zonal secretary (to 2016)

ConductInstitutional negligence, Cover-up / enablingPeriod c. 2012–2016

An investigation letter from Mayapur (c. 2015) reported that four brahmacharis had fled ISKCON Habibpur and accused its temple president, Vrhad Kirtan Das, of sexual abuse and violence, and listed eighteen young men and boys, nine of them aged 14 to 17, as abused up to 2015. It recorded that Bhakti Purusottama Swami, the temple's zonal secretary with Jayapataka Swami, said he was aware of the two Habibpur leaders' "violent nature, mistreating the devotees", while he and the Mayapur general manager "claimed they had no knowledge" of the sexual abuse, and that "no one from Mayapur local management did anything for many many years". A report commissioned by the GBC found that after the two men were suspended in October 2015 he did not remove them as bank signatories and in January 2016 asked for the trust's chairman to be cleared and reinstated.

The letter’s list of victims is not reproduced here. No document has been found that shows when Bhakti Purusottama Swami learned of the sexual abuse, as opposed to the violence, or that anyone reported it to the police. The 2023 appeal argues that, as a person in charge, he failed in a duty to report it under India’s child-protection law (POCSO); that is the complainant’s argument (appeal-2023).

In a letter of about 2015, also in the dossier, Bhakti Purusottama Swami wrote that a review committee had found a complaint against the trust’s chairman “prooved false” and that a further investigation was “in limbo”: “I do not know exactly what to be done.”

Earlier, in 2006, ISKCON’s child-protection office recorded that a complaint about Mayapur’s chief executive and a girl of 14 or 15 was “first … reported to Bhakti Purusottama Swami in the beginning of January”, that “he did not understand the girl was a minor” and “didn’t report it to the CPT”; he later involved Jayapataka Swami and complied with the manager’s interim suspension (report to the CPO, 9 May 2006, in the dossier, pp. 128–131).

No response from Bhakti Purusottama Swami on Habibpur has been found.
