Ananta Rupa Dasa joined ISKCON in Miami in 1973 and was initiated. In the late 1970s and early 1980s he was on the staff of ISKCON’s gurukula schools at Mayapur and Vrndavana (Vrindavan) in India, and he was also on the staff of a school in Manipur. For some time in the 1980s he worked in the life-membership department of ISKCON Bombay. In 2000 ISKCON’s child-protection office said he had recently been living in Andhra Pradesh, and that it had heard he was involved in an orphanage in India.
He is a different person from a devotee of a similar name who served on ISKCON’s Mayapur child protection team in the late 1990s. His legal name, birth year, later life and present whereabouts are not confirmed in the sources reviewed.

In 1989 ISKCON's Governing Body Commission barred Ananta Rupa das from any work involving children and from living in ISKCON centres "due to allegations of child molestation". In July 2000 a panel of ISKCON's Central Office of Child Protection "determined that Ananta Rupa dasa committed physical, psychological, and sexual abuse of many children, causing them tremendous harm and suffering", while he was on the staff of its Vrndavana gurukula.
The panel relied on statements from several former students, notes kept by ISKCON’s former Ministry of Education, and correspondence from 1985–86. It described a letter he wrote to the principal in July 1985 as one in which he “practically admits, although not specifically,” to the allegations. It also quoted an October 1986 letter in which the principal, Dhanurdhara Swami, wrote that he had been “dismissed from our faculty for child molestation”, had been removed from Bombay and Padayatra, and should not be allowed to live in any ISKCON temple.
Former students writing anonymously on the website VOICE in 1997 said that he came to the Vrindavan gurukula from the Mayapur gurukula in about 1981, bringing older Bengali youths who served as monitors in his ashram, and that he and these monitors sexually abused younger boys there; one described him as “extremely domineering”, hitting boys and pulling their ears. One wrote that at a community meeting at the Gita Nagari farm in Pennsylvania in 1990, Dhanurdhara Swami said he had sent Ananta Rupa from Vrindavan to Bombay and later, “with considerable effort”, had him removed from the Bombay temple, where the writer says he had become vice-president, and then from another temple. The writer said nothing was reported to the police. These accounts are anonymous; the monitors they name are not named here, as some may have been minors at the time.
- 1989ISKCON findingGBC 1989 Res. 72: "That, due to allegations of child molestation, Ananta Rupa das, shall be prohibited from working directly or indirectly with any ISKCON school or project that involves children, or living in any ISKCON center." The GBC acted on allegations; the resolution states no findings. It does not refer to the 2000 decision, and the identification rests on matching allegations and restrictions.
- 2000ISKCON findingOfficial Decision of the ISKCON Central Office of Child Protection; not published by the office.
Barred from any contact with ISKCON or ISKCON-affiliated organizations, including temple visits and functions, for ten years. He could then apply for reinstatement on conditions, including at least $7,000 to an organization serving Vaisnava youth, at least $5,000 to the office's fund for victims of his abuse, letters of apology and a psychological evaluation. Even if readmitted, he may not hold any position in ISKCON or affiliated organizations. Whether he ever applied is not known. No police complaint or criminal case has been found.
The decision states that he "has not responded to efforts of the ICOCP to contact him". A 1986 letter from the Vrndavana gurukula principal, quoted in the decision, reported that he "denies any involvement in such crime" and claimed that the school's leaders were corrupt. [2]
